THANE: Five persons, including a couple, have been arrested by Shil-Daighar police for allegedly abducting a two-year-old boy who was reunited with his parents on Monday.
Police suspect it could be a bigger racket of children being abducted and sold across the country. A probe is underway, a police officer said.
Those arrested included Afrin Khan (20), Mubina Shah (40), Mohammad Azharuddun aka Abdullah Khan, Azim Divekar (49) and his wife, Amira (46).
Police received a complaint that a two-year-old boy from Sunil Nagar in Thakurpada of Dahisar village had been kidnapped while his mother had gone out to fill water from a tap nearby on Sunday.
The mother raised a suspicion about their neighbour, Shah, following which police launched a hunt and the child was traced to a house of the Divekars in Mumbra. Khan had transported the abductors in an auto-rickshaw.
Police said Afrin, with the help of her mother, kidnapped the child and kept him at the house of the Divekars.
They registered a case under sections 363, 363(A) and 365 of IPC against the accused. They suspect that the accused and those absconding may have kidnapped 8-10 toddlers in a similar way and may have sold them.
Police had they had a tough day on Tuesday as Afrin was a hard nut to crack and deceived them with various theories, including selling the children and killing them, but none of it could be corroborated. They said she even deceived them that the bodies had been buried in a ditch in Daighar but they could not find anything after digging the ditch.
