Ludhiana: A day after a 25-year-old man consumed poison at the courts complex, he succumbed at a hospital here on Tuesday. On the statement of his father and a death note, the police have booked his in-laws for abetment to suicide.
Police said Rahul, a resident of Alam Enclave, Daba, had tied the knot with Nancy in 2017 against their parents’ wishes. After Rahul’s father disowned him, the couple started living in a rented accommodation in Daba.

His father, Pradeep Kumar, said, “We were in touch with Rahul, even as we were against his marriage. In August 2018, Nancy gave birth to a boy after which her parents took her along to look after her. A few days later, they lodged a complaint with police, saying Rahul had kidnapped Nancy. The case was set aside after Nancy gave a statement in favour of Rahul to police.”

The couple then started living together again. But soon, problems ensued.

“A week ago, Rahul’s in-laws kidnapped him and took him to Bhamiya Khurd. There, they thrashed him brutally. The incident led him to suicide. At the hospital, he gave a note to his friend, Balwinder Singh, accusing his in-laws of forcing him to end his life,” his father added.

Court complex police post in-charge ASI Kuldeep Singh said, “A case has been registered against Rahul’s father-in-law Satish Kumar, mother-in-law Babbli, brother-in-law Sam and relative Anil Bedi under Section of 306 (abetment to suicide) of the IPC. They are yet to be arrested.”

Police said Rahul had consumed poison at the court complex on Monday. After he collapsed, onlookers called up the police, who took him to a hospital.
