HYDERABAD: A private school in Karimnagar was booked on Tuesday for forcing more than a hundred students to stand in the scorching sun for over three hours and carry flags and placards of TRS at a rally to welcome party working president KT Rama Rao.
Following a complaint filed by a child rights NGO on Monday, Karimnagar One Town police registered a case against Hiranmay Krishnaveni Talent School. After district education officer (DEO) conducted an internal inquiry, cops filed the case under section 75 of Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act. “The school was booked for causing physical suffering to children during the rally on March 6. The kids had to stand under scorching sun to welcome the TRS leader,” said a police officer.
A senior official of the women and child development (WCD) department said that 100 students stood in a queue for over three hours to welcome KTR. “They were in the queue line from 11am to 2.30pm. We are also looking into charges that food and water were not provided to the children,” the official said. Sources said DEO S Venkateshwarlu probed the matter after the issue came to his notice.
The WCD department shot off a letter to the DEO who sought an explanation from the school management. “We had sent letters to schools and political parties not to engage children for political, election rallies and roadshows,” the official said.
Child rights activists said it’s time such schools were blacklisted.
“Politicians using schoolchildren in their campaigns is shameful and schools are abusing children by sending them to political campaigns,” said Achyuta Rao of Balala Hakkula Sangham.
