Police have declared an emergency situation in West Gladstone in central Queensland after the discovery of a suspicious device.

The declaration was issued under the Public Safety Preservation Act and an exclusion zone has been put in place.

Queensland Police said emergency services were on the scene about 4.30pm and have asked the public to avoid Flinders Street between Kent Sreet and Railway Pararde.
