CHANDIGARH: The Chandigarh Pollution Control Committee (CPCC) has taken the initiative for scientific disposal of colossal e-waste generated in the households in the city. CPCC is inviting certified companies with experience to process the e-waste. One company has already been finalised.
T C Nautiyal, member secretary, CPCC told TOI, “There was no full-proof arrangement to dispose off the massive e-waste such as TV set, refrigerators, laptops, AC, washing machines and so on generated in the city. The waste was expanding with youngsters opting for newer technology and updated gadgets. The companies which sell electrical and electronic items sell their old items to certified companies which recycle and manage such kinds of waste. But it is the unorganised sector of scrap dealers who buy these items in bulk from the households. Their methods to segregate and process these discarded devices are adverse to human health effects and lead to environment pollution.”
He cited examples of segregation of parts of CFL bulbs by scrap dealers, where glass is thrown irresponsibly which become toxic on mixing up with soil. Same is the case with battery cells, which become carcinogenic on being crushed and getting mixed up with soil and water. This results in polluting of the ground water and affecting human health.
He said the CPCC which monitors collection and dumping of the e-waste had to finally step in to control the grave situation. “CPCC is inviting these certified companies which will process the e-waste in scientific and responsible manner and will give their monthly report to us,” said Nautiyal.
Rajeshwar Singh Gill, partner in the company which has been selected by the CPCC for processing e-waste said, “Our app will be ready by next week. People will be able to get in touch with us to sell their obsolete and old electronic items. We have also generated a helpline number, 9152000097 and website www.sprecorecycling.com to make it easy for people to contact us. We will be providing them competitive prices at par with the scrap dealers and, provide the facility of collecting these items from their homes.”
He said they have machines procured from Japan to process e-waste and soon they would set up another to process even battery cells which at present is done in Delhi. They have set up a collection centre in Sector 34 and Rajpura and another plant at Rajkot in the vicinity of Chandigarh to process and recycle the e-waste.
