Delhi teen dies as kite string slits throat

NEW DELHI: An 18-year-old youth died after his throat was slit by a kite string in Timarpur on Monday evening, when he was returning home on his motorbike.
The victim, Ravi Kishore, had gone to the Nirankari Colony to get spare parts for a room-cooler and was returning home in a hurry as he had to go for shopping for his forthcoming marriage. He used to stay at Gandhi Vihar colony near Burari with his family. The string that fatally injured him was of a kite that was entangled on an electricity pole.
“We had asked him to hurry up since he had to go for shopping with his mother. However, when he did not return for some time we kept calling on his number. Finally someone answered the phone and asked us to reach the hospital,” said Ram Kishore, Ravi’s father.
Ravi worked at a private company and was on his way back from work when Kishore asked him to get the spare part. Eyewitnesses told police that the incident happened near Yogendra Colony. Ravi was driving without a helmet and as soon as he came in contact with the string, he was thrown back due to which he fell and hit his head on the road.
Police said that they received a call from one of the local residents the local residents. Ravi was taken to a government hospital in Kingsway Camp where he was declared dead on arrival. Cops said that the kite string that cut through Ravi’s throat seemed to be few days old, as the kite attached to it was torn and stuck to a pole nearby. Police said that though the string was made of cotton, it was sharpened with deadly glass shards. The string sliced through Ravi’s throat and cheek.
Family members said by the time they reached the hospital Ravi had already died. “We have registered an FIR and a probe is on to identify the source of the string,” said Nupur Prasad, DCP, north.
Ravi’s body was handed over to his family members after an autopsy on Tuesday.
Kishore said that Ravi was the second of his four sons and was the only one in the family to have secured a job. “We had fixed his marriage after two months and were preparing for it. We want strict action against the person responsible for using such deadly strings,” he said.
