IGNOU resumes free admission process for transgender

BHUBANESWAR: Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has decided that it will resume the free admission programme for transgender students from this session (July 2019). It had stopped the free admission programme a few months ago.

Manoj Kumar Dash, Ignou's Bhubaneswar regional centre director, said this while addressing passed out students on the occasion of 32nd convocation of the university. Main function was conducted in Delhi and parallel programmes have been organised at all 67 regional centres including Bhubaneswar of the institution across the country.


On June 30, 2017, the university had announced to exempt the program fee for transgender candidates taking admission into various academic programmes offered by it. But later it was discontinued by the institution.


The interested transgender candidates can apply online for taking admission into various programmes for the upcoming admission cycle (July session). To get this benefit, they have to upload any certificate issued by the government or any other competent authority in support of their candidature as transgender, sources said.


The interested candidates can also contact Ignou regional centre here or any of its study centres for more details on the online admission and various academic programs, said an officer.


On the occasion of convocation programme, a student of Bhubaneswar regional centre Pragnya Paramita Acharya bagged gold medal for her outstanding performance in PG in journalism and mass communication. "We are feeling proud that a student from our regional centre got the gold medal in national level," he added.


Srikrishna Deva Rao, vice chancellor of National Law University, Odisha, and senior IPS officer Sudhansu Sarangi attended the function as guest of honour and special invitee respectively on the occasion.
