The State Council has accepted, in principle, the proposal initiated for such a transformation, as per a statement released on Monday on its website.

Hengqin, located on an island, is close to Macao. The 106.46-square-kms region is anticipated to turn into a global tourism destination with all contemporary industrial system, green ecosystem and smart services.

The development of Hengqin will endorse moderate economic diversification of Macao and turn into a demonstration zone for the deep incorporation of Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao, the statement said.

Also, a free trade pilot zone will be endorsed in the region, according to the statement.

In February 2019, Chinese authorities disclosed the outline development plan for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, focusing to develop the city cluster into a quality living circle for living, working, health care and traveling.
