They described the rape of an eight-month-old baby and toddlers and explained how to kill a child with a knife.

A judge said these types of books fuel a market for exploitation material and may encourage child abuse, the Cairns Post reported.

'Many of the stories involved cruelty and physical harm,' Judge Tracy Fantin said in court.

'The multiple rapes, torture and killing of a pre-teen girl by a paedophile network, sadism, torture, strangulation and garotting.'

'The nature of the content included degrading, sexual violence against children of the gravest kind,' she said.

The man - who volunteers as a lifeguard and children's sports coach near his home in Wonga Beach, north Queensland - admitted the stories were on his laptop but claimed he did not download them.

Representing himself in court, he said the laptop was shared with his wife of more than 30 years.

He cross-examined his wife and son and asked them if they had downloaded the material, which they denied.

The man's wife described him as 'the best husband a woman could want, the best father a child could have.'

A jury found the man guilty of possessing child exploitation material.

He was sentenced to one year in jail but will be allowed out in five months with the rest of the sentence suspended for two years.
