Internal assessment at MGM : After row, relief for 18 students

The recently released result of MBBS final year by the Madhya Pradesh Medical Science University (MPMSU), Jabalpur brought happiness to students of Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College but it also troubled as many as 18 students of the college who were declared “failed” by the University for not getting 50 per cent marks in internal assessment.

Shocked by the results of the ‘first’ batch being graduated under MPMSU, students alleged that the university has failed them without any reason as Medical Council of India’s norm said that students require only 35 per cent marks in the internal assessment to sit in the exam and it require aggregate 50 per cent to get passed in the exam.

However, after the objection by the students and medical college administration over the same, University has declared a revised result in the evening and passed all 18 students who have aggregate 50 per cent marks. According to president of student union in MGM Medical College Mahesh Khachariya said, “As many 18 students got failed in the exam due to not having 50 per cent in the internal assessment. However, the MCI norms said that the students need at least 35 per cent in internal.”

However, University has issued a letter before the exam in which they mentioned that the students require at least 50 per cent in practical exams and 50 per cent aggregate but nothing was mentioned about internal assessment marks. Dean of MGM Medical College Dr Jyoti Bindal too lodged an objection with the university about the results. “We informed the university about the error of failing the students only because of less marks in internal but MCI norms state that they only require 35 per cent and rest they can cover in theory,” Dr Bindal said.

Later, vice chancellor of University Dr RS Sharma said, “We have checked the issue and revised the result. We have cleared those students who have got aggregate of 50 per cent.” He said that those who failed in practical exam will not be cleared as it is necessary to pass the exam.

Students of Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College bring laurels to the college as all the top three students in MBBS final year across the state are from MGM Medical College.  According to student welfare committee in-charge Dr Manohar Bhandari, total five students of MGM Medical College got position in top 10. The students who were in top three are Muskan Chandak, Dr Aishwarya Jain and Dr Palak Thakkar while Dr Mayank Patidar got fifth position and Dr Gunjan Lalwani for seventh place.
