A California man has been charged with murder after allegedly beating his girlfriend’s daughter to death because he was angry she interrupted him.

On the evening of March 26, Adam Hughes was watching his girlfriend’s children, including 4-year-old Kylee Willis, who has Down syndrome, at their Rancho Cucamonga home, the San Bernardino Sheriff’s Office said in a news release obtained by PEOPLE. At some point during the night, Kylee interrupted Hughes, which allegedly made him so angry he assaulted her before putting her to bed.

Hours later, Hughes noticed Kylee was unresponsive and had blue lips and finger tips. He called Kylee’s mother, Corrine Blake, for help, and Blake called 911.

Kylee was transported by paramedics to a local medical center before being helicoptered to the Loma Linda University Medical Center. She had severe head trauma and was put on life support.

The following day, both Blake and Hughes were charged with willful cruelty to a child. Blake posted bail and was released.

On March 29, Kylee succumbed to her injuries and Hughes was charged with her murder.

Attorney information for both defendants was not available Tuesday.

Hughes is currently behind bars without bond.

Kylee’s father created a GoFundMe page to raise money for her funeral.

“My daughter Kylee has forever closed her smiling Irish eyes,” he wrote. “She was taken from this world to soon by the people that we’re sworn to protect her.”
