Beginning his career as a screenwriter, Mahendran made his directorial debut with Mullum Malarum in 1978. He went on to helm films like Uthiripookkal, Nenjathai Killathe, Poottaatha Poottukkal, Johnny, Nandu, Metti and Azhagiya Kanney among others. His last directorial venture was 2006 film Sasanam.
J Mahendran also donned the greasepaint in the latter part of his career. He made his acting debut in 2004 with Kamaraj. He also starred in Theri, Katamarayudu, Mr. Chandramouli, Seethakaathi and Petta. He was last seen in Boomerang.
