Thiruvananthapuram: For the first time, the state will also have an official election song urging the voters to cast their votes.

A first-of-its-kind initiative in the state, the song, penned by former chief secretary and IMG director K Jayakumar and sung by playback singer K S Chitra will be released by Governor P Sathasivam on Wednesday.

It was chief electoral officer Teeka Ram Meena who pitched the idea of coming up with an official election song in Malayalam. “The Election Commission had deputed me to Rajasthan during the previous assembly elections to coordinate the activities of cVigil. It came to my notice that there are several songs in local languages there,” Meena said. He added that he felt that it could be emulated here too, and he requested Jayakumar, a well-known lyricist, about the matter. “Once he agreed to pen the lyrics, we decided to go ahead,” Meena said.

The four-minute song that urges the voter to get ready to vote and also be proud of being a voter, begins as “Bharatha bhagya vidhathakkal naam..”. The song composed by Mathew T Itty contains the ideas of social and national pride. At the event to be held at the VJT Hall, K S Chithra and DMRC adviser E Sreedharan, who are the brand icons of election in the state, will also be felicitated. At the function, the governor will also launch various posters that have been designed as part of systematic voter education and electoral participation (SVEEP) by the Election Commission.
