Pune: Pranks, jokes, some good-old-fashioned humour and a generous dash of sarcasm – here are the key ingredients you need to get your April Fool’s Day stories cracking. But our political parties, currently working in overdrive, decided to use this fun-filled day for a different cause -- election campaign!

Social media platforms were abuzz with jokes about election candidates with Rahul Gandhi and Prime Minister Narendra Modi starring in most of them.

Twitter was a free-for-all battleground where #PappuDiwas vs #ModiMatBanao tweets kept supporters busy.

Facebook was not devoid of action either. The Nationalist Congress Party attacked the present government with an ‘April Fool Banaya’ series on it’s Facebook page, highlighting how the Modi government made a fool out of the people of India.

One of the slogans read “15 Lakh ki baat chodo, Kala Dhan Wapas na aaya. April Fool Banaya”.

The Indian National Congress’ Facebook page brought out the election manifesto of ‘Bharatiya Jumla Party’ (reads BJP when abbreviated) titled ‘Ek Bharat Berozgaar Bharat - Chowkidar Chor Hai’, blaming the chowkidar to have given protection to fraudsters and accusing the ruling party of indulging in ‘Advertising over work; PR for life”.

While the BJP Facebook page was devoid of any April Fool’s Day humour, the same cannot be said about its followers on Twitter. Their target was opposition leader Rahul Gandhi.

#PappuDiwas was trending the entire day, with Twitter accounts of self-proclaimed ‘Chowkidaars’ tweeting entertaining memes and videos of the Congress’ leader to prove their point.

Supporters of Congress fought back with #ModiMatBanao tweets, largely using the Prime Minister’s surname to indicate foolish.
