Man dies in shipping container explosion in Mackay

A man has been found dead after a shipping container exploded with so much force its doors were blown open, police in central Queensland said on Tuesday.

Emergency crews responding to the explosion in Mackay about 2am also found household items in the container.

"The container doors have been opened as a result of the fire and combustion and there appears to be a fair bit of probably household items in the container," Senior Sergeant Dave Parnell said.

North Mackay residents had phoned triple zero to report an explosion on Malcomson Street just before 2am.

Four fire crews, police and paramedics raced to the site, shared by Mackay Trailers and Mackay Containers, and found the shipping container on fire and the body of a 30-year-old man.

Fire crews extinguished the flames and left the site in the hands of police, who declared a crime scene.

Local and state fire service investigators were expected to return to examine the scene on Tuesday.
