Illegal firearms seized, 3 arrested
TNN | Apr 3, 2019, 04:13 ISTSambalpur: In a crackdown on illegal firearms ahead of the elections, Sambalpur police on Tuesday seized six firearms and arrested three persons.
Superintendent of police (Sambalpur) Sanjeev Arora said, “The firearms include three 9 mm pistols and three country-made single shot pistol. Police have also seized six 9 mm live ammunition and a motorcycle from the accused,” he added.
Police identified the accused as Md Samsher alias Pagala, 34, of Motijharan, Deba Bag, 24, of Gopalmal and Md Shakeel, 25, of Mayabagicha, all in Sambalpur.
According to police, after getting the tip-off, the special squad along with Thelkuli police searched the area in front of Bhusan Power and Steel Limited, Thekuli, under Thelkuli police station limits on Tuesday morning.
During the operation, police searched the motorcycle of Md Samsher, who was on his way to Sambalpur from Jharsuguda, and seized four illegal firearms and six ammunition. Subsequently, police arrested Md Samsher and interrogated him.
Md Samsher revealed that he had procured the firearms from Jharsuguda and he was supposed to sell them in Sambalpur. He also disclosed that two firearms had been supplied to Deba Bag and Md Shakeel. Subsequently, police arrested the duo and seized the two firearms, said Arora.
He also informed that Md Samsher is an arms peddler and as many as eight cases are pending against him in various police stations. The accused Deba Bag is also a history-sheeter and we are verifying the criminal antecedents of Md.Shakeel, said Arora.
He said the special squad has been conducting raids since February 1. So far, 24 illegal firearms have been seized. We will continue with the raids, he added. He also informed that the illegal firearms are being procured from Bihar.
