Canberra Now: Community fights for family, and boxer's broken dreams

Morning Canberra and welcome to another working week.

To those of you who got out of bed this morning on your first alarm, I salute you.

With an overnight low of 3 degrees, I wouldn't blame you for hitting snooze and snuggling back under the covers - and it's only going to get colder in the weeks and months ahead.

We're headed for maximum of 21 today with light winds.

Let's get into today's local headlines.

Queanbeyan rallies to save 'model citizens' from deportation

This is heartbreaking. A local family is facing deportation, after their application for permanent residency was knocked back because their son is deaf.

But the Queanbeyan community is not letting them go so easily and has taken the fight all the way to the minister.

Jobs created on Canberra's light rail 'exceeded expectations'

As the light rail launch date draws closer, I thought I'd factcheck a claim from Bill Shorten that there were 1400 direct jobs created during the construction.

Incredibly, the ACT government reckons more than 4500 were inducted onto the project, which is the proxy they are using to estimate how many jobs it created.

New compliance team to crack down on off-lead dogs, errant signs

Don't you hate it when you're out trotting around the lake and you're forced to dodge quickly because some jerk didn't pick up after their dog?

Soon there'll be a new team hitting the streets handing out fines to people like that. About time.

Another one from me here.

When running out of power is Dutch for living in the moment

Now this is putting a good spin on a bad situation. While the prospect of running out of charge in an electric vehicle would have me blowing into a paper bag, this Dutch "social traveller" has termed it "range excitement" and uses it as a chance to make friends.

Peter Brewer has the yarn for you.

Abe Archibald fighting through adversity

Torn biceps, broken Olympic Games dreams and controversy. This story from Caden Helmers has it all.

Boxer Abe Archibald is on the hunt for a win after overcoming some serious injuries.
