An extensive search of his home and yard uncovered a freezer buried at the rear of the property, prompting officers to set up a crime scene.

Det Insp Briese said police could not confirm what officers found inside the freezer but did say homicide detectives had been brought in and grave concerns were held for the wellbeing of Mr Thornton.

'It’s hard, I can’t give you any details on that yet, and we are waiting on scientific to arrive,' he said.

'For now we have got to a certain point where we have stopped the dig and are waiting for scientific to arrive.'

Det Insp Briese said the tip-off they received on Friday pointed them back to the property and a particular area of the yard to dig.

'In particular the reason for going back today because of information received yesterday but obviously we are dealing with a missing person so we are looking for any evidence in that area that may assist us in locating him,' he said.
