17 candidates file nominations for SGCCI’s VP post
TNN | Apr 2, 2019, 04:00 ISTSurat: At least 17 candidates filed their nominations for the post of vice-president of Southern Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SGCCI) on the last day for submission of papers here on Monday.
However, SGCCI office-bearers are not sure about election as things may get settled for the VP’s post in the managing committee meeting through selection procedure in the coming days.
Sources said even if SGCCI goes for election, the contest would be mainly between diamond industry leader Dinesh Navadia and textile entrepreneur and former councillor Nitin Bharuch.
The last date for withdrawing of nomination papers is April 4.
SGCCI president Hetal Mehta told TOI, “I don’t see any serious candidate willing to contest for the post of VP. The chances of candidates opting for selection of VP through managing committee are bright. But we cannot predict someone’s intentions until the last day of withdrawal of nominations.”
Present vice-president Ketan Desai will take over as new SGCCI president for the year 2019-20 from Hetal Mehta in June.
The selection committee, which has around 10 former presidents of SGCCI, four active members and two current president and vice-president, will be declaring the new vice-president of SGCCI if all the candidates withdraw their forms.
“We have formed the selection committee and its decision will be binding to all the candidates when all the nominations are withdrawn on April 4,” said a managing committee member.
