Supreme Court pulls up Assam government over illegal foreigners

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Monday accused the Assam government of playing hide and seek with the court's resolve to unravel the mystery of over 40 lakh people not figuring in the National Register of Citizens (NRC) but only 1,000-odd being detained as foreigners.
The apex court demanded that it be informed of measures taken till now, dismissing Assam's proposal of using radio tags and biometrics as options for the future.
Enraged by the state chief secretary skipping the hearing on detection of illegal migrants, a bench of CJI Ranjan Gogoi and Justices Deepak Gupta and Sanjiv Khanna asked solicitor general Tushar Mehta if non-bailable arrest warrants were required to secure the official's presence. Repeated entreaties by Mehta saw the CJI-led bench direct state's chief secretary to appear before it on April 8.
