Tom Brady‘s first day on Twitter has already sent the social media site’s users into a frenzy.

The New England Patriots quarterback joined Twitter on Monday — a.k.a. April Fools’ Day — writing in his first-ever message, “I’m retiring. In my spare time, I’ll be tweeting #LFG.”

While many appeared to be immune to the athlete’s gag, some other Boston fans were apparently sent into a panic. And many Twitter users — namely, fans of other NFL teams — expressed disappointment at the quarterback’s note once realizing the date.

“I never clicked on something so fast in my life,” wrote one Twitter user.

“I wish this was real,” wrote another.

Later, Brady confirmed he was, in fact, joking around.

“Was this a bad joke,” he tweeted after the initial message.

Earlier this year, the 41-year-old insisted he won’t be hanging up his cleats anytime soon, regardless of what happened in Super Bowl LIII (which marked another win for Brady).

“I’ve said that for a long time,” Brady told ESPN in January. “I feel like I’m asked that a lot, and I feel like I repeat the same answer. But no one believes me.”

“I’ve set a goal for myself at 45,” he continued. “Like I’ve said before, it’s very hard to make it that far. I know how hard it was this year and the commitment it takes, and hopefully, I’ve learned from some of the things that happened this year to be better next year. But every year is tough.”

When it comes to retirement, Brady said he’ll know when the time is right — and that time isn’t now.

“I’m gonna feel like, ‘OK, I’ve had enough,’ ” he told the outlet. “I don’t quite feel like that yet.”
