Double demerits will be enforced for eight days over the Easter and Anzac Day long weekends.

Drivers breaking the law will cop double demerit points during the Easter weekend from Thursday, April 18 to Monday 22 and the Anzac Day weekend from Wednesday, April 24 to April 28.

Extra penalties will apply for motorists in New South Wales this weekend if they are caught speeding, not wearing a seatbelt, or using their mobile phones at the wheel.

An extra demerit point will apply for any other traffic offence.

Drivers breaking the law will be faced with double demerits from Thursday, April 18 to Monday 22 over the Easter period (stock)

The double demerit points period applies from midnight of the start date to midnight on the finish date (stock)

Police have introduced the incentive to remind drivers to take care on the road, obey road rules and comply with the traffic laws.

According to Transport for NSW, 107 people have been killed due to roadside tragedies as of Monday.

Drivers caught driving while using their phones risk losing up to 10 demerit points.

Drivers who are speeding, using their phones, not wearing a seatbelt or riding without a helmet will be slapped with hefty fines and lose double demerit points

While motorists face losing six demerits if they are caught not wearing a seatbelt.

This could increase if their passengers are also found not to be wearing seatbelts.

Speeding motorists could lose 12 demerits and cop a fine, depending on the severity of the offence.

Motorbike riders will risk loosing six demerits if they are caught driving without a helmet.

Double demerits in each state

Queensland

In Queensland, double demerit points apply all year round.

People who repeatedly commit specific offences will receive double demerit points for the second or subsequent offence if the later offence was committed within 12 months of an earlier offence.

ACT

The double demerit period will be in force for drivers in the ACT from Thursday, April 18 to Monday, April 22.

Western Australia

Double demerits will also be in force in West Australia from Thursday, April 18 to Monday, April 22.

There won't be any double demerits on ANZAC day as it falls on a Thursday.

The other states

South Australia, Victoria, Tasmania and the Northern Territory do not enforce double demerit points, but rogue motorists still face sizable fines for traffic offences.
