NEW DELHI: A man was left battling for his life after being stabbed multiple times by robbers in southeast Delhi’s Lajpat Nagar. The victim was attacked when he was going to the market to buy vegetables for his shop.
Senior police officers said that the victim has been identified as Kailash and a case of robbery has been registered at Amar Colony police station. The 40-year-old victim is still undergoing treatment at Safdarjung hospital.

A neighbour of the victim, Dulal Karmakar, said that the incident happened on Thursday morning, when Kailash was walking near Lajpat Nagar traffic signal near Captain Gaur Marg.

“A local came running and said someone stabbed my neighbor, Kailash, who was lying near the traffic signal. I made a PCR call but nobody arrived for at least 15-20 minutes. We then decided to take him to the hospital ourselves since he was bleeding profusely,” Karmakar said, adding that they tied peices of cloth around the wounds to try to stop the bleeding.

Later, the cops also reached the hospital, where doctors said the victim had multiple deep stab wounds on his back, stomach, thigh and arms, and was unfit to give a statement. However, his friend Rohit Mandal, who helped take Kailash to the hospital, told cops what his injured friend had told him.

The probe revealed that Kailash, who has a vegetable shop, had just left his house near Srinivaspuri for supplies when he was waylaid by at least three youths armed with knives. The men held Kailash at knifepoint and tried to snatch his wallet, which contained approximately Rs 13,000.

When Kailash resisted, he was stabbed multiple times and thrashed by the men. They then took his cash and other valuables before fleeing and left him bleeding on the spot. He was spotted by a local who got help from the nearby colony. Locals alleged that the cops arrived 10 minutes after Kailash had been taken to the hospital.

Investigating teams later managed to record the statement of the victim after he was stabilised, but he is still under medical observation after undergoing surgeries in his stomach. The teams are now scanning the CCTV footage from the area to ascertain the exact sequence of events and identify the men behind the incident.
