SC defers hearing on SNC-Lavalin case

Thiruvananthapuram: In a major reprieve to CPM and CM Pinarayi Vijayan, a division bench of the Supreme Court on Monday deferred the hearing on SNC-Lavalin case appeal filed by CBI for a date when court reopens after summer vacation. The case will now be heard in July only.

Solicitor General Thushar Mehta appeared for the CBI in the court on Monday. He said he was prepared to argue the case and reminded the court that the case was supposed to be listed for a non-miscellaneous day during the last hearing. Justice N V Ramana, who headed the bench, then said that one of the accused has given a letter seeking time to file affidavit. He said the argument could be started after considering that. Then, the order was passed to consider the case after vacation.

The CBI has challenged the decision of Kerala high court discharging Pinarayi Vijayan and two others from the case in the SC.

The case has the notoriety of flaring up during the poll season. It was on the notification day for assembly election in 2006 that the then CM Oommen Chandy handed over SNC-Lavalin case probe to CBI. The charge sheet was framed by CBI in January, 2009, ahead of the crucial Lok Sabha elections.

When the SC scheduled the hearing for April, there were apprehensions in the CPM that the hearing might happen when the campaign peaks and the issue would be back on focus once again.
