PATIALA: Patiala MP and Punjab Democratic Alliance candidate Dr Dharamvira Gandhi on Monday demanded that all the persons arrested for possessing a small amount of drugs should be released.
He said this while extending legal support to a landless farmer who was nabbed by the police last week for sowing poppy husk in his farmland. He also met the family members of the arrested farmer.
Dr Gandhi, who has been demanding de-criminalisation of marijuana and other traditional drugs in Punjab, announced to provide all legal help to Sukhpal Singh of Sadh Majra village of Samana division in the district.
The police had recovered 19kg of poppy husk sown in Singh's farm and registered a case against him under sections of NDPS Act at Ghagga police station.
“The state government should release around 22,000 arrested persons under charges of drug smuggling as the government had failed to nab any big fish and is arresting only those people and workers who use to consume traditional drugs for work,” said Dr Gandhi adding that synthetic drugs are being supplied at a massive level and the suppliers are roaming free.
