A 63-year-old woman and her two-year-old granddaughter have been left badly injured after being struck by a car in a hit-and-run in Melbourne

CCTV footage released by police on Tuesday shows the moment a black Toyota RAV 4 plowed into the pair as they crossed the intersection of Glen Huntly Rd and Booran around midday on February 20.

The elder woman is seen on the ground and trying to get back on her feet while tending to the young girl lying on the road.

The pair were then assisted by two bystanders who helped them back onto the footpath.

Meanwhile, the driver, believed to be a middle-aged woman, is seen pulling over before approaching the injured girl and grandmother.

She allegedly told them she would call for medical assistance before returning to her vehicle and taking off, police said.

The older woman, from Elsternwick, remains in hospital after suffering 'serious' injuries. The young girl suffered bruising and trauma.

Authorities are now asking anyone with information on the driver to come forward and contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
