PUNE: The Wanowrie police on Monday booked a man for killing his wife by hitting her with an axe while she was fast asleep over a domestic dispute at their residence at Wadkarmala in Mohammadwadi around 12.30am.

Police identified the deceased as Sangeeta Chavan (26), a native of Bijapur in Karnataka. The relations between Sangeeta and her husband Shrikant Chavan (35), both labourers, had turned sour. He was in the habit of consuming liquor, was harassing her over trivial issues, and beating her for not cooking food properly.

Inspector R D Bhapkar of Wanowrie police said, “Sangeeta had gone to sleep when her husband in a fit of anger killed his wife by hitting her with an axe on her neck. The impact of the incident was such that the victim died due to serious injuries on the spot. The incident came to light after neighbours on hearing a commotion rushed to her house and found her lying in a pool of blood. Chavan took to heels after the incident.”

The victim leaves behind two sons - a one-year-old son and a two-year-old. Her mother Tara has registered an FIR against Chavan for physically and mentally harassing her and subjecting her to cruelty.
