Ludhiana: Five inmates of Ludhiana Central Jail attacked another inmate on Sunday morning due to an old rivalry. The attacked inmate — who is an undertrial — sustained injury on his head, and was taken to civil hospital for treatment. The incident occurred hours before the visit of a high court team to the jail for inspection.

The inmate has been identified as Harvinder Singh, who entered the jail on March 25 in a murder case of Samrala. It is alleged that the inmates who attacked him were already known to him, and had some old rivalry. On Sunday morning, when the inmates came out of the barracks for a roll call, a group of five attacked him. Harvinder was administered two stitches on his head, and later discharged from the hospital.

On Saturday afternoon also, two inmates indulged in a spat, following which one attacked another with a thermos, resulting in a minor injury. The injured inmate, Piyush, was taken to the civil hospital for treatment. According to information, Piyush is a convict in an NDPS case, while accused Vikas Kaushal is convicted in a murder case. The duo had some argument on Saturday afternoon over money, after which Vikas attacked Piyush with a thermos.

Jail superintendent Shamsher Singh Boparai said: “I was occupied with the high court inspection team, and could not follow up the matter. I will get it checked and file a complaint.”
