Years of Mark Zuckerberg's Facebook posts have mysteriously vanished, including unfulfilled promise to keep Instagram separate - as social media giant blames 'technical errors'

  • All posts from 2007 and 2008 have been deleted from Mark Zuckerberg's profile
  • Acquisition of Instagram in 2012 and pledge to keep it independent is now wiped
  • Now fears deletion of posts make it more difficult to hold Facebook accountable

Years of Mark Zuckerberg's Facebook posts detailing crucial updates about the company have vanished, it has been revealed.

Previously-public posts made on the billionaire's personal account have been wiped, including everything he shared during 2007 and 2008.

Core announcements such as the acquisition of Instagram in 2012 and Zuckerberg's pledge to keep the photo app independent from Facebook - something the tycoon has gone back on - have also disappeared.

A Facebook spokesperson claimed the posts were 'mistakenly deleted' due to technical errors.

'A few years ago some of Mark's posts were mistakenly deleted due to technical errors. The work required to restore them would have been extensive and not guaranteed to be successful so we didn't do it,' the spokesperson told Business Insider.

'We agree people should be able to find information about past announcements and major company news, which is why for years we've shared and archived this information publicly — first on our blog and in recent years on our Newsroom.'

The deletion of the posts make it more difficult to hold Facebook and its CEO, 34, accountable for previous statements.

The removal of Zuckerberg's post in which he promised to 'building and growing Instagram independently' stands out because those plans have been scrapped.

Facebook now integrates Instagram more closely than ever, a sticking point which led to the resignation of two of the photo app's co-founders last September.

It comes after Zuckerberg admitted social media firms should be regulated more in a bid to take the burden of keeping web users safe off of digital companies.

It follows a series of controversies for the social network, including the live-streaming of the Christchurch terror attack in New Zealand which was viewed 4,000 times before it was removed.

The Facebook founder said governments and regulators needed to play a ‘more active role’ in policing the web.

In a statement published by The Washington Post, Mr Zuckerberg, 34, said: 'Every day, we make decisions about what speech is harmful, what constitutes political advertising, and how to prevent sophisticated cyberattacks.

'These are important for keeping our community safe. But if we were starting from scratch, we wouldn't ask companies to make these judgments alone,' he wrote.
