“It is a case of contract killing where Dharmbeer, a former sarpanch of Ahir Majra village in Sonipat, had hired shooters to kill Dr Maha Singh, a resident of Manuwas village. The sarpanch, who is currently on the run, was allegedly in a relationship with the doctor’s wife,” said Subhash Boken, Gurugram police spokesperson.

On August 7, 2012 the doctor was returning home from clinic when three armed assailants stopped him at a chowk in Silani village and gunned him down.

The doctor had died on the spot. While an FIR was registered on the same day, but the accused remained at large for six years. In 2018 the case was transferred to the crime branch.

On February 20, 2019, crime branch inspector Satender Rawal received a tip-off, based on which he along with his team arrested Rizwan, one of the suspects from Sonipat.

He was taken on four days’ police remand and during interrogation, he confessed to the crime. He claimed that the sarpanch had paid him Rs 25 lakh to kill Dr Maha Singh. Police said the sarpanch and deceased’s wife belonged to Ahir Majra and were allegedly involved in an extramarital affair. Dr Maha Singh (35) was married for about two years and had an eight-month-old son when he was shot dead. When asked if any action was taken against the deceased’s wife, officers said there was no evidence indicating her involvement in the murder.
