MUMBAI: Western Railway (WR) has written to the civic authorities on Friday seeking an inspection of the Matunga Road skywalk after several pictures warning about its safety went viral on social media. But civic officials said it was inspected and was safe for use.

Following the Himalaya FOB crash outside CSMT on March 14, which killed six, several pictures started doing the rounds on social media about the skywalk which connects the railway station FOB. One image showed a 'separation' in the bridge too.

In the letter to assistant municipal commissioner (G north ward) Ashok Khairnar, WR senior divisional engineer, referring to clippings and public claims, said it needed inspection, adequate maintenance and necessary action. "The skywalk needs to be audited and its safety has to be certified by BMC as the FOB is adjacent to the railway station and railway tracks," stated the letter. Khairnar said the concern had been raised with the civic bridges department.

BMC bridges department chief engineer Sanjay Darade BMC said it was a construction joint and the FOB was safe.
