Contrary to the claims of the Bharatiya Janata Party that its alliance will win more than 300 seats in the parliamentary elections, Dravidar Kazhagam president K. Veeramani said that the BJP-led alliance would face a humiliating defeat.
Speaking at a meeting here on Saturday to seek votes for the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance’s candidate for Madurai Lok Sabha constituency Su. Venkatesan, he said the BJP secured only 31 % votes in the last parliamentary elections. “Remaining 69 % of the votes were against BJP and Narendra Modi. This time, they will not even get 9 % of votes,” he said.
He said that there was a wave against the BJP across the country as witnessed during the black flag protests not only in Tamil Nadu but even in States like Assam. He added that democracy and secularism were being crushed under BJP’s rule.
He came down heavily on the AIADMK for pawning the party with the BJP.
Though there were other criticisms on her, the late Chief Minister and former AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa was against an alliance with the BJP during the last elections. “Today, the party is under the influence of the BJP and some leaders are shamelessly calling Modi as their daddy,” he said.
Appealing to the public to vote for Mr. Venkatesan of the CPI (M), he said that the vote was not for CPI (M) or the DMK but for the future of the country.
