THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The state government has issued strict instructions that schools should not hold regular classes in the summer months of April and May and that all schools should close for vacations by March end and only reopen on the first working day in June.

"The state disaster management authority has given warnings in view of the severe summer heat. Severe heat and scarcity of water can cause health issues in children. The child rights commission too has recommended against conducting classes during summer vacations," a circular by general education secretary A Shajahan said.

Summer classes for 10 days only

The instructions will be applicable to all government/aided/unaided lower primary, upper primary, high school, higher secondary and vocational higher secondary schools.

Schools can, however, conduct summer vacation classes for “maximum 10 days” after obtaining special permission, the circular said. Officials concerned are expected to visit the schools and evaluate facilities before giving permission. Educational officers have been asked to strictly follow the instructions and take appropriate action against those who violate them.
