LUCKNOW: A head ‘muharrir’ (police clerk on the rank of head constable) was arrested and sacked for embezzlement of Rs 10 lakh cash from the ‘Maalkhana’ of Hazratganj Kotwali in Lucknow on late Friday.
The accused Ashok Singh was arrested on charges of criminal breach of trust by a public servant and sacked. Singh confessed that he had taken out Rs 10 lakh from Maalkhana.
He bought land in Para for Rs 8 lakh and even got its registry done and had kept remaining Rs 2 lakh with him which was seized from his house on Saturday night.
The embezzlement came to light on Friday night when SHO Hazratganj Radha Raman Singh conducted an inspection of the Maalkhana.
The SHO informed SSP Lucknow Kalanidhi Naithani about Rs 10 lakh cash missing after which investigation was carried out in which it surfaced that Ashok Singh was the custodian of the ‘Maalkhana’ keys and hence the onus fell on him.
A case of criminal breach of trust by a public servant was registered against Singh. SSP assigned the probe of the case to ASP (East) Suresh Chand Rawat.
Rawat said that the accused muharrir was posted in the same capacity since 2009 and had been recently shifted to Gautampalli police station.
He saw this change as an opportunity and used the cash to purchase land worth Rs 8 lakh while planning to put it back after getting it from an acquaintance. He, however, did not get the cash and in the meantime, Rs 10 lakh were found missing.
