Debate heats up: It's Khune v Keet for AFCON spot

2019-03-30 10:46

Cape Town - Wits coach Gavin Hunt has hinted that Darren Keet's European experience may see him claim the number one spot for Bafana Bafana at AFCON 2019 even if Itumeleng Khune is fit.

Khune is out for the season with a shoulder injury but could be fit for the Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Egypt during June and July.

Keet was in some inspired form for Bafana during last Sunday's crucial 2-1 victory over Libya - a result that saw the national team finish second in their group behind Nigeria and thus qualify for the competition.

Nonetheless, Hunt takes the view that Keet was the right choice to face the Mediterranean Knights and hinted that the 29 year old's ability to deal with crosses gives him the advantage over Khune.

He told Kickoff: "It [the performance] is nothing new, nothing unexpected. We expected a performance like that.

"He has been with us two, three years now and we've won trophies. It was a good, solid performance. We are happy that he played a part.

"The decision [to play him as the one number one goalkeeper at AFCON] will come when Khune, who has been the number one, comes back.

"But in a game against Libya Keet would have been a better option than Khune anyway because of the way they play.

"He is more suited to a European based type of game, where the ball is going to...there is no one who can take a cross better than him, even Khune. He can take the crosses all day, if he is not punching he is catching."
