The State Health Department will constitute an inquiry committee by next week to probe into the maternal deaths reported in government hospitals in various districts of the state.
Chennai:
“The panel comprising of experts is being formed to probe into the transfusion of lysed blood. Once the committee is formed, the investigation shall be completed within two weeks. It will probe into the alleged involvement of medical staff, blood bank personnel, nurses and others,” said Director of Medical Education Dr Edwin Joe.
Meanwhile, Health Department officials have questioned the doctors and nurses working at the three hospitals regarding the issue. Health Secretary Beela Rajesh had ordered a criminal action and disciplinary proceedings against those responsible for the maternal deaths. However, the action to be taken against the guilty will be decided after the detailed inquiry.
This follows a recent internal audit by the department that revealed more than seven deaths this year in Krishnagiri, Hosur and Dharmapuri districts after the pregnant mothers were transfused with lysed blood.
