LUCKNOW: While the Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC) is reeling under acute financial crisis, a glaring example of laxity in its functioning came to the fore recently, when officers found that they had no clue about the existence of more than 1 lakh taxable properties with a total dues of over Rs 90 crore.
The serious lapse was detected, when a tax defaulter approached authorities to settle his dues under the new one-time settlement (OTS) scheme. Officers found that his name was missing from the official list of defaulters prepared for the LMC.
An inquiry found that names of around 1 lakh taxpayers, who have not cleared dues for the past five to six years, were missing from the records.
Most of these properties are in the old city. These included 25,000 houses in Yahiyaganj, with a total tax dues of Rs 18 crore and 19,000 properties having a total Rs 27 crore dues in Raqabganj. Other areas like Arjunganj, Aishbagh, Husainabad and Ismailganj had around 50,000 taxable properties with dues amounting to Rs 40 crore.
It was also revealed that though these properties were listed in the assessment done by the LMC in January this year, employees forgot to add them in the final list prepared for the OTS. Now with the addition of these 1 lakh properties, the city has over 6.5 lakh house tax defaulters with total Rs 880 crore dues. Municipal commissioner Indramani Tripathi said, “Action will be taken against employees found guilty of laxity.”
