Punjab: 2 students feared drowned in Bhakhra canal, 1 rescued by locals

PATIALA: Two students of Desh Bhagat Ayurvedic College were feared drowned while one other was rescued by locals after the trio was washed away in strong currents in Bhakhra canal in Fatehgarh Sahib district on Saturday.

The police claimed that the three students had reached the Narwana branch of the canal and were enjoying at a place when one of them tried to wash his hands in the water. The police added that within a minute, the boy who had climbed down the stairs slipped and fell into the canal.


After hearing his cries, the remaining two students tried to rescue him but they also slipped into the canal, police said. Police said the incident took place at around 3.30pm.


Some locals reached the spot to held the students and informed the police.


“We immediately reached the spot. Meanwhile, locals managed to rescue one of the student identified as Parnav Singh of Pathankot who was rushed to a nearby hospital while search for the other two is underway,” Sirhind SHO Rajiv Sood said.


The police said that the other two students have been identified as Honey Tyagi of Delhi and Hassan Farid Ansari of Dehradun. The police added that more divers were called for help to locate the missing boys.
