Indian bison kills estate worker in Nilgiris
TNN | Mar 31, 2019, 04:58 ISTUdhagamandam: A gaur (Indian bison) killed a tea estate worker at the Kundha forest range in the Nilgiris on Saturday.
The victim, 59-year-old S Raju, was a resident of Thuthurmattam village, police sources said. “He was taking a stroll around 6.30am when a bison herd strayed into the estate. One of the animals attacked him. He died on the spot,” a police officer said.
Forest department officials sent the body to the government headquarters hospital for autopsy and handed over Rs 50,000 as initial compensation to the victim’s family. “Rs 3.50lakh will be disbursed to family after procedural formalities,” an official said.
Due to a dry spell prevailing in the Nilgiris, elephants and gaurs are straying into human habitations in search of food and water. TNN
