Forest fire on patches of Kolli Hills

Fire still rages on patches at the foothills of Kolli Hills and 150 forest and fire and rescue services personnel are involved in putting out the blaze.

Though they managed to control the spread of the blaze within the ghat road by Friday morning, these patches that are afire pose the threat of turning into a major forest fire.

The forest fire broke out on Thursday around 3 p.m. at Karavalli in Nadukombai Forest beat area following which tourist traffic was suspended.

District Forest Officer (DFO) R. Kanchana said that though less, the presence of dried bamboos was threatening the spread of fire.

She added that officials were investigating the cause of ignition and they would have to continue the surveillance in the area for another two days to prevent further spread of fire.

Ms. Kanchana also said that a proposal had been sent to the government to remove dried bamboos in the areas.

Damage

Though officials are yet to assess the actual damage, the DFO said that approximately 25 hectares would have been damaged in the fire.

Forest personnel from all ranges in Namakkal and Salem, anti-poaching watchers from Sathyamangalam and 25 firefighters are involved in controlling the fire.
