The BJP in Gujarat is not of the mood to make any experiment in the selection of the candidate for the remaining seven seats. The party has made the tight selection of candidates for 19 seats on which candidates are declared and including party chief Amit Shah from Gandhinagar, all of them belong to the same region. Now, the rest of seven candidates will also be resident of the particular constituency, a party source said.
A very senior leader of the party said without going on record, "Our priority are the local candidates and we have decided to stick to that. The final list of the candidates will be announced in a day or two and the candidates will be among the local organisation."
"When we were listening to the party workers during visits to different constituencies for selection of the candidates, the cadres expressed that the candidate should be from among them. The party had given tickets to some outsiders in last polls but after elected they were hardly approachable to the local organisation of party or voters and that could turn into anti-incumbency votes," added the leader.
This theory basically applies to two seats on which candidates are to be announced and there is a high demand for a local face. These two seats are Ahmedabad East and Surat. The party had given the ticket to actor Paresh Rawal on Ahmedabad East seat and he became MP too. He, then hardly appeared in the constituency and that became bone of content for local leaders.
The party gave a ticket to Darshana Jardosh in last two polls from Surat seat. Jardosh is definitely a local leader but this time, the Saurashtra Patel community leaders of BJP in the city have been demanding ticket to a person from among them. The demand has created a divide and the split has become wider in BJP after the native of Surat city opposed the demand from Patel community.
"We are going to exploit the condition on Patan seat also by giving a ticket to Thakor community leader from Patan district, as Congress has given a ticket to Jagdish Thakor who is considered to be an outsider. There is a disappointment in Congress's Thakor leaders from Patan and that will give benefit to BJP candidate," the leader further added.
