Genesis To Charge Up New York With New EV Concept

The New York Auto Show is less than a month away and it appears Genesis will use the event to introduce an all-new concept.

In an interview with Roadshow, Hyundai Motor Group design boss Luc Donckerwolke confirmed the luxury brand will unveil an “electric show car.” Donckerwolke declined to elaborate, but this will mark the second year in a row that Genesis will introduce an electric concept in New York.

Last year, the company unveiled the radical Essentia concept which featured a carbon fiber monocoque chassis, a high-density battery pack and a “multi-motor electric powertrain.” This setup enabled the coupe to accelerate from 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) in an estimated 3.0 seconds.

Besides introducing the new concept, Genesis will unveil the US-spec 2020 G90. Originally introduced in South Korea last November, the facelifted sedan features a massive crest grille which is flanked by new headlights. The car has also been equipped with a new hood, restyled taillights and an improved infotainment system.

Besides talking about Genesis, Donckerwolke confirmed Kia will introduce a concept of their own. There’s no word on specifics, but the company recently unveiled the Mohave Masterpiece and SP Signature concepts at the Seoul Motor Show. It remains unclear if Kia’s New York concept is all-new or simply one of the aforementioned models.

Hyundai will also have a big presence at the show as the company will unveil the 2020 Sonata and 2020 Venue. The latter is a small crossover that will slot beneath the Kona. Little is known about the model, but previous reports have suggested it will be positioned as an entry-level, niche vehicle and feature a “very boxy, bold, bull-doggy character.”
