Is this the grubbiest move of 2019? Newcastle Knights player Tim Glasby cops an elbow to the HEAD as refs are slammed for not sending Joseph Leilua off

  • Canberra Raider's Joseph Leilua called out for delivering elbow to opponent
  • Leilua went to play the ball though an unrelenting Tim Glasby held him down
  • Leilua was seen hitting the Newcastle Knights player in the face with his elbow
  • While the Knights were given a penalty, Leilua walked away without punishment

Canberra Raiders player Joseph Leilua has been slammed after he delivered a brutal elbow to the face of Newcastle Knights' Tim Glasby.

The Canberra centre dealt his opponent the astonishing blow with only 12 minutes left on the clock during the match at his home ground, GIO Stadium, on Friday night.

Coming off a tackle, Leilua had gone to play the ball but found himself unable to break free from Glasby's hold.

Moments later, a visibly annoyed and short-fused Leilua rammed his elbow into Glasby's head, sending his opponent flying backwards.

Without a sign of remorse, the Raiders player leapt to his feet and stood over a downed Glasby.

'Unfortunately, that is very Joey Leilua,' Fox League commentator Warren Smith said.

Glasby had to be taken off and David Klemmer fielded.

Although Newcastle Knights were awarded a penalty, Leilua walked away without any repercussion.

And that has not sat well with outraged spectators.

'How is purposely elbowing someone in the face not a sin bin offence?' one person tweeted.

Another posted: 'Not sure how Leilua didn’t get at least a sin bin at the end there. And also not sure if there was a off season rule change, but Lee was tackled before he was dragged out.

'Should’ve been a Knights penalty. Ah well, not a Newc [sic] fan so I’m not bothered that much.'

Fortunately for Leilua, his team still managed to seal a 17-10 win, in an otherwise clean game.
