Ludhiana: Attempting to cross railway tracks at the last minute proved fatal for an 18-year-old youth as he was run over by a Ferozepur-bound passenger train near Sham Nagar crossing late in the city on Wednesday evening.
This has been fourth death on railway tracks in city limits in the past three days.

The deceased was identified as Deepak Kumar. Following the accident, the rail traffic was disrupted for 20 minutes on the Ludhiana-Ferozepur route.

A gateman deputed at the railway crossing informed the GRP control room about the accident, after which a police party reached the spot and initiated further action.

GRP ASI Jiwan Singh, investigating officer, said the youth, who worked in a cosmetic shop, was crushed under a passenger train when he tried to cross the rail tracks in a hurry.

“The documents recovered from his possession helped the police to ascertain his identity. In the preliminary investigation, police suspect that the youth might be under the influence of drugs,” the cop said.

Deepak’s family has told police that he was on his way to buy vegetables from a market.
