Patna: HC advocates’ association condemns lawyer’s killing

PATNA: The Patna High Court Advocates’ Association president and senior lawyer Yogesh Chandra Verma on Friday condemned the killing of lawyer Mamta Devi (42).
Mamta Devi was shot dead in front of her maternal home at Parsa village under Naubatpur police station area in Patna district on Thursday morning.
Verma demanded that culprits must be arrested within 24 hours and investigation must not be kept lingering for several months and instead must be completed within two months’ time along with submission of the chargesheet.
He once again pressed for the demand from state government for rolling out a law for lawyers’ protection in state which is absent till now, a job and financial assistance of Rs 50 lakh to the kin of the slain lawyer.
Verma is also the chairman of the coordination committee of the all three associations of the Patna high court.
Meanwhile, Naubatpur police station SHO Kamleshwar Prasad Singh said that an FIR against seven persons, all relatives of the slain lawyer, was lodged by her family and raids were on to nab them.
“Old dispute over maternal property prima facie seems to be the main reason behind her killing. Mamta’s sister’s husband was also murder was her cousin brother over property dispute around four years back under Bihta police station area,” the SHO said.
He said seven empty cartridges of 7.65mm, generally used in country-made semi-automatic pistols by criminals, were recovered from spot.
Singh said that Mamta had left her husband’s residence located at Karkat Bigha under Paliganj police station area and was living at her parent’s residence with her two sons and was fighting cases to take share of property.
