NCCL raises concern over CBDT letter
TNN | Mar 30, 2019, 04:46 ISTNagpur: The Nagpur Chamber of Commerce Limited (NCCL) has raised concern over the recent letter circulated by Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) to principal chief commissioners of income tax on increase the tax mop up so that the targets are met. The CBDT letter has directed the officers to take all the possible actions to increase the revenue collection which is 15% below the target at present.
NCCL has strongly opposed any such instruction as it has caused a great deal of concern in the minds of taxpayers, it says. Such pressure will invariably end up in harsh measures taken to the detriment of taxpayers. “This is in sharp contrast to the stated motto of government of ushering a taxpayer friendly regime,” said a press release issued by the chamber’s former President Kailash Jogani.
“In a large number of cases, the demands are disputed in appeal and the concerned tax payers have very high chances of succeeding the appeals,” said Jogani.
The chamber has urged the finance ministry, CBDT and income-tax department not to take any action which is not in the larger interest of the taxpaying community. “In future also the government should adopt the recovery measures after following the due process of law,” said Jogani.
