The 30 static surveillance teams and as many flying squads deployed across the district have so far seized unaccounted cash of ₹1.59 crore, Collector Shilpa Prabhakar Satish said on Friday.

Speaking to reporters here after allocating symbols to candidates of Tirunelveli Lok Sabha constituency, Ms. Shilpa said the surveillance teams and flying squads had so far seized unaccounted cash to the tune of ₹1.59 crore and ₹8.04 lakh-worth material transported without proper documents. They would be returned only on production of valid documents.

While vehicle passes for electioneering had been given to 23 vehicles in the constituency so far, 18 had been issued in Tenkasi (Reserved) constituency.

The EVMs with ballot and control units and VVPATs to be used on April 18 had been sent to all 10 Assembly segments in the district after proper first-level checking, randomisation in the presence of representatives of political parties and numbering. The machines would be under constant surveillance through cameras fitted in strong rooms.

The names of candidates in fray and their symbols would be fitted soon in the presence of their representatives.

The district had 5,034 service voters, who would get their ballots on time and they should be sent to the officials concerned at the earliest. The postal ballots received on May 22 morning would be accepted.

The first phase of training for polling personnel would be conducted on March 31 during which the postal ballot papers would be distributed. The second phase of training would be conducted on April 7.

Candidates facing cases should place three advertisements in print media and two advertisements in electronic media so that the voters would get know about the background of the candidates. They should then submit proof to the District Election Officer within 48 hours. If not, a complaint would be forwarded to the Election Commission, Ms. Shilpa said.
