PUNE: Lecturer Madhukar Salve (54) was arrested on Thursday from Vishrantwadi for helping arrested mechanical engineer Sanjay Shinde in impersonating as a sub-inspector and duping youths of over Rs8 lakh on the pretext of giving them jobs in leading firms.
A Hadapsar police team led by assistant inspector Prasad Lonare and under senior inspector Sunil Tambe picked up Salve, a lecturer in an unaided college in the city, from his residence. The action came after Shinde revealed his involvement in the crime during the questioning.

Police said Salve had earlier cheated Shinde on the pretext of offering him a job. But Shinde later befriended Salve.

The duo then came up with the idea of cheating youths. Shinde decided to disguise himself as a sub-inspector and purchased a new uniform from a shop.

Investigations revealed that the suspects collected money and Salve often took youngsters to educational institutes and government offices and lured them claiming they would get jobs soon.

After Shinde was arrested, eight persons approached the Hadapsar police to lodge complaint against him. The Saswad police in Pune rural also lodged an FIR against Shinde recently for cheating a resident there on the pretext of offering him job.

Assistant inspector Lonare said, “We seized Shinde’s cap and car during investigations. The khaki uniform used by him was seized by the Beed police around six months ago. Shinde and Salve will remain in police custody till March 31.”

Shinde was arrested on March 19.
