I read Konrad Marshall's story [March 16] with interest. When I played schoolboy rugby union in the late '70s and early '80s, if I or any other player was concussed, we would not play the following week. It's a shame pro football codes didn't follow this basic rule of common sense.

In 1984, Muhammad Ali was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, with reports attributing it to the punches to his head during boxing bouts. Alarm bells should have rung then in all contact sports.

Groomed by a grandfather

Lucy Cormack's article [March 16] was chilling. Apparently one in 100 people are psychopaths, skilled liars and arch manipulators. I know how that feels, since my own father refused to protect me from the paedophile who sexually assaulted me, preferring not to deal with the scandal. He then asked me, a terrified 13-year-old in the 1960s, what I had done to make the man do that! Yet it continues. I acknowledge the courage of the parents – and, especially, the children – to recognise and share their story.

Absolutely flabulous

We have options about how we see our ageing bodies [March 16]. As an invisibility cloak, or as a fabulous time machine continuing to enable us to live a good life in these healthier times of increasing longevity, surrounded by family, friends and workmates.

The Full Bottle

Surely, Huon Hooke [March 16], the practice of a guest bringing a bottle of wine to dinner began in the days of NSW Governor Arthur Phillip, when invitations to Government House included the injunction "BYOB". Admittedly, in those days it meant "Bring your own bread", but the principle has not changed.

L: RICHARD JOHNSON This is one of the best pieces of journalism I have read on the issue of concussion in sport ["Headcase", March 16.]. It is well researched, balanced, and provides a great summary of the state of the issue in the AFL (and more broadly). Well done, Konrad Marshall.

F: SHANO ANTHONY None of these players were forced to play AFL footy. They all did so willingly, knowing full well it was a contact sport.

T: @THEGASMAN15 The super salary you got paid to play should cover it; retire at 30!!! That's the price.

F: MEREDITH BLAKENEY To the people saying no one forced you … do you feel that way about others who are hurt on the job site?

F: TAMMY CORNISH Unfortunately this is not an isolated incident of children growing up with despicable relatives ["Groomed by a grandfather", March 16]. I admire those brave enough to name and shame the monsters.

F: FIONA ATKINS Rhonda Farrell is a truly gifted specialist [Two of Us, March 16]. Her skills and patient-centred approach are a blessing to all.

F: LOUISE HARMES Just re-read this ["My father the fascist", March 8], with the horror that unfolded in Christchurch at the forefront of my mind. The degree of hatred that some are consumed by is truly shocking. This is an important story. Thank you, Frank Robson, for telling it.
