A Melbourne high school was placed in lockdown amid reports of a 'suspicious person' lurking in the playground.

Police were searching Thomastown Secondary College about 20km north of the CBD.

Pictures showed officers combing the school buildings and playground, while others showed terrified students hiding under tables.

A Victoria Police spokesman told Daily Mail Australia at the time: 'Police are currently at a Thomastown secondary school following reports of a suspicious person on the school grounds. 

However, they have since discontinued the search - no suspicious person was found.  

The school has since been declared safe and the lockdown has been lifted.
